Westside High School Fluid Cooler and Enclosure

Keeping a Campus Comfortable Through New Cooling Infrastructure
Westside High School added a new fluid cooler system, keeping classrooms, offices, and common spaces comfortable for teachers, students, and staff. 7er Construction delivered the $2 million project, building both the cooling system and the structural enclosure that houses it.
Work began below grade with selective demolition, site grading, excavation, and new underground piping and utilities. Our team then placed the structural foundation and equipment pads to support our steel, precast concrete enclosure, and the fluid cooler.
We installed the new fluid cooler and associated equipment in the new exterior enclosure. The electrical team set transformers and gear to pull in a separate electrical service to power the new system. Inside the school's mechanical spaces, we installed pumps, heat exchangers, and tanks that distribute water throughout the building while supporting temperature control. Crews ran new piping and control wiring, connecting everything to the building's existing systems. The team worked closely with the district to test and commission the integrated system before turning it over.
Because school remained in session throughout the spring semester, work was sequenced around students' learning and extracurricular activities to reduce disruptions. The project team maintained weekly communication with the Athletic Director, particularly during sidewalk replacement, to ensure athletes, visitors, and other occupants had safe points of entry and exit during sporting events, band activities, and other school events. Parking lot closures and building system shutdowns required for tie-ins were scheduled in advance to further minimize disruptions to school operations.
With the new system in place, Westside High School is equipped to stay cool and comfortable for years to come.
